Prize awards and scholarships
Students have several opportunities to obtain scholarships and other forms of funding their studies, offered by the State Scholarship Foundation, as well as other public or private, Greek and foreign institutions, funds and bequests.
Awards usually consist of an honorary diploma and a one-time lump sum. Scholarships provide students with financial support to cover living expenses for a period of their studies.
The University of Crete, the School of Philosophy and the Department of History and Archaeology have established the following scholarships through bequests or donations:
The award consists of a monetary prize of 5.000 euros. Eligible are Masters Students and Doctoral Candidates, as well as those who have completed their studies during the previous year, whose research has significantly contributed to the advancement of their discipline and the promotion of the University of Crete. The award is granted by the Society of Property Management of the University of Crete.
The Scholarship is awarded annually and is worth 400 euros per year. It is granted to one undergraduate Archaeology student, male or female, in the 3rd year of their studies.
Eligibility criteria, as expressed by the donor:
Candidates should be of Greek nationality and Cretan descent, with a particular interest in the archaeology of Crete from the Minoan to the Roman period. Eligible students should have a low income and exhibit high academic performance.

a) Curriculum vitae
b) Detailed grades transcript
c) Letter of recommendation by a tutor in the respective field of study
d) Birth certificate
e) Copy of the IRS income declaration E1 for both the applicant (if they have submitted one) and the parent acting as legal guardian.
The award ceremony will take place in Rethymno, in the presence of the donor herself.
To honor the memory of the Cretan scholar Menelaos G. Parlamas, the Association “University of Crete Friends” of Heraklion established an award which is to be granted to one, two or three graduate students studying in the Faculty of Letters of the University of Crete, upon submission of an academic essay. The amount of the prize is fixed to 1,000 euros if it is awarded to a single candidate; if the prize is awarded to two or three candidates, they will receive 500 euros each. The award is accompanied by a honorary diploma inscribed with the logo of the Association and the name of the awarded student. Submitted essays may have been written for academic assessment or not; accordingly, they may be either published or unpublished. They should be based on original research concerning the Ancient, Medieval or Modern periods of the Greek civilization. Each essay is submitted in three printed copies, as well as in electronic form to the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Letters. The membership of the grant committee is announced by the Dean. The award ceremony takes place in Heraklion, where Menelaos Parlamas lived and produced his oeuvre.

To honor the memory of William Stanley Moss (1921-1965), a British writer, journalist and traveller, who fought in Crete during World War II, the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Crete offers an annual award to a doctoral student of the Department working in the field of “History”. The award is funded thanks to the generosity of Mrs Gabriella Stanley Bullock, daughter of William Stanley Moss, and is worth 1,000 British pounds. Candidates should submit a complete chapter of their doctoral thesis, which will be evaluated for its quality. According to the donor’s wishes, the Cretan origin of eligible candidates will be taken into consideration.
The State Scholarships Foundation (ΙΚΥ) awards
1) IKY offers one-time scholarships to students who have excelled either in the entrance examinations to Higher Education Institutions, or in their annual academic performance.
2) IKY also offers scholarships to Higher Education Graduates for graduate studies in Greece and abroad. Information on the available scholarships is announced in the course of every academic year by the Ministry of Education at the website Scholarships/Legacies (in greek), also containing a Guide to Scholarships (updated in 2013).
