Christina Tsigonaki was born in Athens in 1969. She studied History and Archaeology at the University of Crete. She received a D.E.A. in Byzantine Archaeology from the University Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne. She received her Ph.D. from the same University with a scholarship by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY). The subject of her Ph.D. thesis was the architectural sculpture in Crete during the early Byzantine period. Since 2003 she has been teaching byzantine archaeology at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete, where she was appointed Lecturer in 2009 and Assistant Professor in 2016. Since 2010 she has been conducting the excavation of Sector II at Ancient Eleutherna. Since 2017 she is co-director of the archaeological survey at Oros Oxa (Elounda). Member of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies/Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (Rethymno, Greece).
Research Interests: Archaeology of the East Mediterranean during the Early Byzantine period: Monumental topography and topography of human activity, landscape archaeology, urbanism, religious and secular architecture, architectural sculpture, new technologies in archaeological research.
