Ancient Mediterranean World - History and Archeology
The Graduate Studies Program in the Ancient Mediterranean World-History and Archeology (AMW-HA) consists of the three major collaborating courses (Ancient History, Classical archeology and Prehistoric Archeology) particularly concerning early, prehistoric and protohistoric, hellenic and roman Antiquity. The Program aims at promoting quality interdisciplinary knowledge and research, and at developing well informed experts, capable for global, thorough theoretical approaches, and for the exploitation of primary archeological and archeo-historical material and the related sources.
The Graduate Program has been founded as an extension of the Graduate Studies Program of Classical Archeology, one of the first Graduate Programs of the country, created in 1994. It emphasizes particularly on periods such as Paleolithic/Mesolithic or Roman and on civilizations such as the Minoan civilization, taught extremely sparsely in other Greek universities. It is also caracterized by a human centered scientific approach, putting forward important ever modern social and cultural questions, for instance gender problems, slavery, insularity, mediterranean commercial networks etc., as detected in prehistoric antiquity and the historical era.
The AMW-HA Graduate Program also trains students in related sciences (Epigraphics, Numismatics, Archeometry etc.), as well as in methods and technics of field resesarch through compulsory participation in excavations (Pl. 1.1) and surface research conducted primarily by the Department, and contribution to field practices/visitations of archeological sites and museums (Pl. 1.2-1.3), collections, archives etc. both in Greece and abroad; students also contribute to the study and publication of archeological finds from the above research. Graduate students benefit from the rich in books, periodicals, collections etc. University Library, as well as from the related Department Workshops (Preservation Workshop, Prehistoric Archeology Workshop (Pl. 2.1-2.2), Collections and Molds Workshop).
Entrance examinations are held twice a year, at the beginning of winter and spring semester, open to students having graduated from History & Archeology Departments, Departments of Cultural Studies, Literature, Philosophical and Social studies, Philosophy, Education and Psychology, Sociology, Social anthropology or Ethnology, as well as from Higher Schools of Art, Architecture, and Health Sciences, in Greek or foreign authorized universities, as well as having graduated from related Technological Educational Institutes (TEI).
Attendance at the Program lasts two (2) years and is divided in at least four (4) semesters. Students are expected to qualify in 5 seminars (3 included in the main course chosen), in two field practices as well as one field research. After fulfilling their oligations, they are expected to compose and present a final public Thesis, the grade of which is included in their Graduate Degree.
To those Graduate students who fulfill successfully their obligations, the Graduate Program in AMW-HA awards a Graduate Degree of Expertise (GED-Μ.Δ.Ε.) in one of the three major courses: (a) Classical Archeology, (b) Ancient History and (c) Prehistoric Archeology.
